Iranian Woman Detained After Stripping in Protest Against Dress Code

Iranian authorities have detained a young woman who staged a provocative protest at Islamic Azad University in Tehran by removing her clothes and appearing in her underwear. The incident, which has garnered significant attention, highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the country’s strict dress code laws. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, are calling for her immediate and unconditional release.

The Incident

The unidentified woman was filmed walking around the university grounds wearing only a bra, underwear, and flat shoes, seemingly in response to harassment she faced from a member of a volunteer paramilitary force for not wearing a headscarf. Eyewitness reports indicate that her actions were a form of protest against the oppressive enforcement of Iran’s mandatory dress code for women.

Footage shared on social media showed students and onlookers, dressed in the state-mandated hijab and modest clothing, observing the scene. After walking out into the street in her underwear, a subsequent video captured her being forcibly placed into a vehicle by men in plain clothes. Reports suggest that she was beaten during the arrest, and details regarding her current location remain unclear.

Calls for Action

Amnesty International has condemned the arrest, asserting that Iranian authorities must “immediately and unconditionally” release the student who was violently detained. They emphasized the need to protect her from torture and ensure she has access to legal representation and family support.

The United Nations’ special rapporteur on Iran, Mai Sato, has also expressed concern over the incident, stating that she will be closely monitoring the authorities’ response. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the university, Seyed Amir Mahjob, indicated that the student had been transferred to a psychiatric hospital following her detention, questioning her mental state and suggesting that her actions might not have been a protest.

Context of the Protest

Under Iran’s stringent interpretation of Islamic law, women are required to wear a hijab in public. This law is enforced by the so-called morality police, and violations can lead to severe penalties. The death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September 2022, after being detained for improperly wearing her headscarf, ignited widespread protests both within Iran and around the world. The backlash against Amini’s death resulted in hundreds of fatalities due to the violent crackdown by Iranian authorities.

Despite the inherent risks, many Iranian women continue to challenge the dress code by publicly removing their head coverings. The recent incident reflects the ongoing struggle against oppressive regulations and the desire for personal freedom.

International Response

In light of these events, the U.S., Canada, and Australia have imposed sanctions on a group of Iranian officials for their roles in suppressing dissent and detaining individuals in connection with Amini’s death. A United Nations fact-finding mission earlier this year determined that Iran was responsible for the physical violence that led to Amini’s death and criticized the excessive use of force by security forces against demonstrators.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, with human rights advocates urging for accountability and change in Iran’s treatment of women and their rights.
