Elevate Your iPhone Photography with Photographic Styles

For many iPhone users, capturing photos with Apple’s exceptional cameras is a daily routine. However, as great as these images can be, they often start to look uniform due to Apple’s computational photography, leading some users to feel frustrated with the over-sharpened and oversaturated results. Fortunately, there’s a solution: Photographic Styles.

What Are Photographic Styles?

Introduced with the iPhone 13, Photographic Styles allow users to apply personalized filters that enhance the look of their photos in real-time. Instead of editing photos post-capture, these styles are applied live, making it easier to achieve the desired aesthetic. Users can choose from five styles: Standard, Rich Contrast, Vibrant, Warm, and Cool.

To access Photographic Styles, navigate to Settings > Camera > Photographic Styles. Here, you can preview each style and select one to use in the Camera app. Remember, the chosen style is baked into the photo, so there’s no going back once it’s taken. However, Apple designed it to be opt-in, so you can easily switch back to the default style each time you open the camera.

What’s New with Photographic Styles on iPhone 16

With the release of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, Photographic Styles received significant upgrades, enhancing user experience and customization options:

  • Expanded Selection: Choose from 15 styles instead of just five, including must-try options like Amber, Gold, Rose Gold, Quiet, Ethereal, Vibrant, and Stark B&W.
  • User-Friendly Wizard: A new setup wizard helps users find a style that fits their photography preferences, making it easier to establish a default style.
  • Intuitive Touchpad Control: The touchpad feature allows for real-time adjustments of tone and color, making fine-tuning much more intuitive.
  • Non-Destructive Editing: If shooting in HEIF format, users can revert to the original image, allowing for greater flexibility in their edits.

Customizing your Photographic Style is simple and can significantly enhance your photography:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to Camera > Photographic Styles.
  2. Tap the Get Started button. You’ll be prompted to select four of your favorite recent photos to preview live edits and presets.
  3. Explore the various styles, including colorful and monochrome options. If none fit, stick with the Standard style for customization.
  4. Use the touchpad to adjust the Tone (Y Axis) for contrast and the Color (X Axis) for saturation. A slider allows you to tweak the intensity of the filter.
  5. Once satisfied, tap Save Tone and Color to establish your customized Photographic Style as the default.

If you prefer not to set a default style, you can still apply your chosen Photographic Style directly in the Camera app:

  1. Open the Camera app and tap the new Touchpad icon (a square outline with dots inside) in the top-right corner.
  2. This will bring up the Photographic Styles interface. Swipe through the styles and select one that appeals to you.
  3. Adjust the tone and color using the touchpad, and finalize your intensity settings.
  4. The selected style will apply as long as you’re in the Camera app. If you wish to make it your default later, follow the steps outlined above.

Conclusion

With the enhanced Photographic Styles feature on the iPhone 16 series, users can significantly improve their photography by personalizing the look of their images. By taking a little time to explore and customize these styles, you can create unique, standout photos that reflect your personal aesthetic and move away from the standard iPhone look.
