Chinese Hackers Target Trump and Vance’s Cellphones: Investigation Underway

In a concerning development, sources have revealed that Chinese hackers have targeted the cellphones used by Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, and his running mate, J.D. Vance. The information surfaced on Friday, prompting investigations by U.S. officials into potential breaches.

Investigation Details

While it remains unclear what specific data may have been compromised, U.S. officials are actively looking into the matter. The FBI has not confirmed the identities of the targeted individuals but stated that it is investigating “unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure” linked to actors affiliated with the People’s Republic of China.

“The FBI, along with various agencies across the U.S. government, is collaborating to aggressively mitigate this threat and is coordinating with industry partners to strengthen cyber defenses within the commercial communications sector,” the FBI reported.

Broader Cyber-Espionage Campaign

Sources indicate that Trump and Vance are among several individuals whose phone numbers were targeted, suggesting a larger cyber-espionage campaign orchestrated by China. The New York Times was the first to report that Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence had been specifically targeted, with the Trump campaign being alerted by U.S. officials earlier this week.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung criticized the situation, alleging that the campaign of Democrat Kamala Harris has emboldened foreign adversaries, including China and Iran, although he did not provide further details about the hacking incident.

Ongoing Threats from Chinese Cyber Operations

The FBI has issued repeated warnings over the past year regarding Chinese hacking operations. In January, FBI Director Chris Wray informed Congress that investigators had disrupted a state-sponsored group known as Volt Typhoon, which targeted small office and home routers owned by private citizens and companies. The group’s ultimate goals included critical infrastructure such as water treatment plants, electrical grids, and transportation systems across the U.S.

In a related report last month, Wray revealed that the FBI had interrupted another Chinese government campaign targeting universities, government agencies, and various organizations, which resulted in the installation of malicious software on over 200,000 consumer devices, including cameras, video recorders, and routers.

Cyber Threats in Canada

Chinese cyber activity is not limited to the United States. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recently reported that a state-sponsored threat actor from China has conducted reconnaissance scanning against numerous domains in Canada over several months. The primary targets included federal government departments and political parties, with additional focus on organizations in the defense sector and critical infrastructure.

As investigations continue, the implications of these cyber threats underscore the growing concerns about national security and the vulnerability of political figures to foreign espionage.
