Box Office Report: “Terrifier 3” Opens Strong at $18.3 Million, “Joker 2” Faces Major Drop
This weekend’s box office presents a stark contrast between two iconic clowns, as Cineverse/Bloody Disgusting’s “Terrifier 3” has carved out an impressive $18.3 million opening weekend across 2,514 theaters. In contrast, Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Folie a Deux” has experienced one of the steepest second-weekend drops for a wide release, taking in only $7 million after a staggering 81% decline from its initial $37.8 million debut.
“Terrifier 3” Surpasses Expectations
“Terrifier 3,” with a combined production and marketing budget of just $2.5 million, has not only eclipsed the $10.6 million domestic total of “Terrifier 2,” but has also outperformed many of this year’s Blumhouse releases, including “Speak No Evil” and “Night Swim.” Even if the film sees a significant drop in its second weekend, it has already achieved a remarkable return on investment.
“Joker 2” Struggles at the Box Office
The $190 million sequel to “Joker,” which previously became the first R-rated film to gross $1 billion worldwide, is now facing scrutiny for its disappointing performance. If the $7 million figure holds after Monday’s actuals, it will mark the worst second-weekend percentage drop for any wide release that opened with $30 million or more.
Other Box Office Highlights
In other news, Universal/DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” is holding strong, earning $13.5 million in its third weekend with only a 29% drop. The film has benefited from positive reviews and an increase in family audiences due to the Columbus/Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday.
With a running total of $83.7 million domestically and $148.4 million worldwide, DreamWorks has already greenlit a sequel for “The Wild Robot.”
Additional Releases
Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” continues to perform well, grossing $7.1 million in its sixth weekend. The film has reached a domestic total of $275 million, positioning it to potentially surpass “Dune: Part Two” as Warner’s highest-grossing film of the year in North America.
Focus Features’ “Piece By Piece,” a Lego animated documentary about musician Pharrell Williams, opened to $3.8 million from 1,851 theaters, narrowly beating Paramount’s “Transformers One,” which earned $3.6 million in its fourth weekend.
Sony/Columbia’s “Saturday Night” debuted with a muted $3.5 million after a platform release in Los Angeles and New York, while Toho’s “My Hero Academia: You’re Next” brought in $3 million from 1,845 theaters.
In the bottom of the top ten, Briarcliff Entertainment’s “The Apprentice,” starring Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump, managed to gross $1.5 million from 1,740 theaters despite significant pre-release publicity.
