Hurricane Milton Leaves Windy Conditions in South Florida
MIAMI – Windy conditions persisted across South Florida on Thursday as Hurricane Milton moved off the state’s east coast after making landfall near Siesta Key, close to Sarasota, on Wednesday night with sustained winds of 120 mph.
By Thursday afternoon, Milton had shifted away from Florida and was tracking north of the Bahamas.
Meteorologist KC Sherman from NEXT Weather reported that a wind advisory remained in effect for eastern Broward and Miami-Dade counties, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. As Milton exited the region, drier air began to move back in.
The tropical storm warning for all of the Florida Keys and from the Palm Beach-Broward County line southward was lifted early Thursday morning.
Air Travel Disruptions
Hurricane Milton significantly impacted flights at South Florida airports.
At Miami International Airport, 148 flights were canceled and 77 were delayed by Thursday morning. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International reported 47 delays and 58 cancellations.
On Wednesday alone, nearly 2,000 flights within, into, or out of the United States were canceled, according to FlightAware. This included over 380 cancellations at Tampa International Airport, which remains closed.
Tornado Activity in South Florida
Hurricane Milton also spawned multiple tornadoes across South Florida on Wednesday.
One tornado touched down along Alligator Alley in western Broward County, but no damage was reported. Another tornado struck the Wellington area of Palm Beach County, causing damage to homes and downing trees. Tragically, tornadoes turned deadly at a mobile home park near Fort Pierce.
A tornado watch was in effect for all of South Florida until 9 p.m. Wednesday, with several tornado warnings issued for Broward County. Statewide, there were 42 reports of tornadoes and 95 warnings on that day.
Forecast for Improvement
“Conditions will start to improve by late Thursday,” said Ivan Cabrera, CBS News Miami’s chief meteorologist. “We anticipate a quiet and tranquil pattern setting up for the weekend and into next week.”
On Friday, there will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, with cloudy skies and a 20% chance of rain both during the day and at night, according to the National Weather Service. North winds are expected to reach around 14 mph with gusts up to 23 mph during the day, and 10 to 13 mph at night with gusts as high as 22 mph. Highs are projected to be near 86°F, with lows around 75°F.
