South Korea Demands Immediate Withdrawal of North Korean Troops Allegedly Deployed in Russia

South Korea has urgently demanded the withdrawal of North Korean troops allegedly deployed in Russia, amid rising concerns over deepening military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. This call to action comes after South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed the deployment of North Korean special operation forces to support Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.

Allegations of Troop Deployment

On Friday, South Korea’s spy agency reported that 1,500 special operation forces from North Korea were sent to Russia this month. This follows claims by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who stated that his government had intelligence indicating that 10,000 North Korean soldiers were being prepared to assist Russian forces in their invasion of Ukraine.

South Korea’s Diplomatic Response

In response to these developments, South Korea summoned Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev for a meeting. During this meeting, Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun “condemned in the strongest terms” the dispatch of North Korean troops, labeling it a “grave security threat” to both South Korea and the broader international community.

According to a statement from the South Korean Foreign Ministry, Kim emphasized that South Korea, in collaboration with its international partners, would mobilize all available resources to address actions that threaten its vital national security interests.

Russian Response

The Russian Embassy responded to the allegations, with Ambassador Zinoviev asserting that the cooperation between Russia and North Korea is not aimed at undermining the security interests of South Korea.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, South Korea’s call for the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops reflects the growing alarm over the potential implications of military collaboration between Pyongyang and Moscow.
